The US has awarded Putin a surprise victory

U.S. magazine Newsweek headlined that the past elections in Turkey were won not by incumbent Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, but by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to the Turkish Central Election Commission (CEC), Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the incumbent president of Turkey, won the last election. However, Newsweek magazine believes, at least in the headline, that Russian leader Vladimir Putin won the presidential race.

“Russian President Vladimir Putin achieved victory in Turkey’s presidential election on Sunday,” Newsweek wrote.

The US magazine claims that the victory of the incumbent Turkish leader in the election is “good news” for Putin. As close diplomatic relations remain between the countries, and Turkey plays not the least role in resolving the Ukrainian crisis, the article said.

“Erdogan’s victory will probably guarantee that the status quo will be maintained,” Newsweek believes.
