Foreign Ministers of Germany and Hungary argued over positions on the OTP bank – Politico

At a meeting of the heads of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the European Union in Brussels, a dispute broke out between the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Peter Szijjarto, and the German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock. This incident arose because of the position of Budapest on the Hungarian OTP bank. This is reported by TASS, referring to the newspaper Politico.

Szijjártó and Burbock had a strong argument at the meeting of EU Foreign Ministers in Brussels. The reason for the quarrel between the heads of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Germany and Hungary was the question of Budapest’s position on the Hungarian OTR bank.

At the same time, earlier the Hungarian diplomat claimed that Hungary does not agree with the provisions of the 11th package of EU sanctions against the Russian Federation. He also noted that he would not approve the provision of military assistance to the Kiev regime from the European Peace Fund until the OTP bank was excluded from the list of Ukraine – “international sponsors of the war.”

The newspaper claims that during a closed meeting of EU foreign ministers, Burbock responded too “sharply” to the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, when he again demanded that OTP be removed from the above list. At the same time, the head of the German Foreign Ministry allowed herself to accuse the bank of violating international law. Szijjarto, in turn, denied such accusations.

The publication clarifies that at the same time, another source believes that the exchange of views between the two heads of foreign affairs departments was “civilized and normal within the framework of the discussion.” It is specified that Sweden and Estonia during the meeting tried to put pressure on Budapest on the issue of introducing new sanctions against the Russian Federation and providing additional military assistance to the Kyiv regime.
