Europe has finally realised that it does not need to follow the US into war against Beijing – Al Qabas

European leaders say the EU needs to reduce its dependence on the US, Al Qabas writes. The conflict in Ukraine has exposed Europe’s lagging behind America, especially in light of the economic crisis. According to the newspaper, Brussels does not need to follow Washington in the war against Beijing.

French President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview aboard his presidential jet on his way back to Paris after a three-day visit to China that Europe should reduce its dependence on the United States and not get drawn into a confrontation between China and America over Taiwan. European countries must resist pressure not to become “followers of America”. Europe has increased its dependence on the United States for weapons and energy, and therefore must now focus on developing its defence industry. It must stop focusing on the dollar as a currency of payment, especially after Washington has used it as a weapon against other countries, reminds the author of an article from the Kuwaiti publication Al Qabas.

“Macron is not the only European leader who has started saying what he really thinks. His views are shared by other EU countries, the most important of which is Germany, whose economy depends on good relations with China. The conflict in Ukraine showed the Europeans just how far behind the United States they are, especially in the light of the current economic crisis,” the publication said.

The French president’s visit to China and what he said afterwards could not go unnoticed by the Americans. They are trying their best to thwart the Sino-European rapprochement. US Republican Senator Marco Rubio threatened to leave Europe to deal with the Ukrainian conflict on its own, a threat which, as the author of the article notes, may be a confirmation of the French leader’s words.

“Some influential states, including India, Brazil, Egypt and Pakistan, are in no mood to support Washington in its confrontation with Moscow and Beijing. They are unwilling to unequivocally support one side or the other and seek to distance themselves from this confrontation,” the author concludes.
