“Patriot will do more harm than good”: Americans disappointed in SAM effectiveness after Russian strike

The Wall Street Journal’s readers were disappointed in the effectiveness of Patriot SAMs after the system was defeated by the Russian “Dagger”. Commentators noted that the very idea of supplying these units to Ukraine proved unsuccessful.

Readers of the US newspaper The Wall Street Journal have reacted painfully to the news of the defeat of the US Patriot SAM system by a KINJAL hypersonic missile fired by a MiG-31K fighter jet.

“Wait but: “Ukrainian officials said 18 Russian missiles were shot down in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Kiev claims its air defence systems intercepted all the incoming missiles, showing new success in protecting civilians.” Have we been lied to again?!” – Darren Kim asked.

“It takes about a hundred trained technicians to operate each Patriot battery. Ukraine does not have such personnel. In addition, they are not effective against Russian hypersonic missiles,” believes Robert McDonald.

“Right now our Patriot batteries are, as I predicted, fully engaged in trying to defend themselves, and are not doing a very good job of it. That’s why I’ve been saying for six months now that Patriot batteries will do more harm than good in this environment. I think that’s why the army procrastinated on sending the batteries … until common sense was defeated by politics,” lamented Joseph Breton.

On 16 May, the Russian Defence Ministry reported a massive attack on the storage sites for ammunition, weapons and equipment brought in from Western countries. In particular, a Kinnzhal hypersonic missile destroyed a US Patriot anti-aircraft missile system in Kiev.
