Police fired tear gas at a Labour Day demonstration against pension reform in Paris. Participants set fire to rubbish bins and pelted police with stones and bottles. According to a TASS correspondent, puffs of black smoke can be seen on Boulevard Voltaire and several bus stops and bank windows have been smashed.

The radical protesters, who were on their way to the Plaza de la Nation before the union column, clashed with the police almost immediately after the union column started moving from the Place de la République.
According to the prefecture of the Metropolitan Police, even before the beginning of the demonstration, police had carried out 2 740 checks and detained several people and removed from their possession “items that could be used against law enforcement officers”. According to the BFM TV channel, 22 of the detainees were involved.
A pension reform law to raise the retirement age in France from 62 to 64 and to abolish a number of special pension regimes is due to come into force in the autumn. The initiative has sparked demonstrations and strikes across the country.
