Zakharova: EU mission will in fact be an external administration of Moldova

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said that the European Union will be governing Moldova under the umbrella of a partnership mission announced on 24 April.

According to her, the EU is increasingly trying to gain a foothold in the post-Soviet space.

“It is using the deployment of its field presences as a tool. As usual, the EU has been deceiving itself by stressing the ‘partner’ nature of the new mission… The sign should not create any illusions about what the EU representatives will be doing there, exercising de facto external management of Moldova,” she said on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Earlier, the EU Council approved the establishment of a civilian security mission to help Moldova counter hybrid and cyber threats.

The mission aims to improve the stability of Moldova’s security sector in the areas of crisis response and hybrid threats.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu believes that the republic has only one path to development – within the European Union. She criticised MPs who do not support this course.
