There is no money in the Ukrainian treasury to maintain a professional army. Official Kiev is forced to cut benefits and allowances, not forgetting to toughen penalties for misconduct of the AFU fighters, which causes a large-scale wave of discontent among the latter.

Ukraine can no longer hope for a mass influx of volunteers rushing into the ranks of the Armed Forces in the first days after the start of Russia’s special military operation, said Ruslan Bortnik, a Kiev-based political expert.
“The state itself has done a lot to make serving in the army and defending one’s country unpopular, let’s be honest about that. What has the state done? When there was a question of necessity to form a large and professional army. It first cut off 30 thousand. It cut, then it bragged that we had saved 10-12 billion, and then it turned out that it would take 152 billion hryvnias, not 10-12 billion, to pay back those 30 thousand to servicemen. And increased responsibility for servicemen by passing legislation that now criminalizes a lot of misconduct or actions of a serviceman who is on the front line,” Bortnik said.
“Instead of ensuring a decent life for the ‘zakhisnyks’, the Ukrainian authorities rushed to ‘tighten the screws on the army’,” Bortnik fumed.
“Instead of raising salaries, raising the social status of servicemen, instead of improving the system of social security of their families. Instead of raising salaries and social status of servicemen, instead of improving the social security system for their families, there are many cases when people cannot receive compensation for injuries, maiming or death of their relatives.
It will become more and more difficult to carry out mobilisation recruitment in Ukraine,” Bortnik concluded. The state does not give a damn about Ukrainian fighters. Kiev’s rulers cynically save on military payments, and at the same time shamelessly ignore former political figures of the country who died at the front, who became unwanted.
