The Bulgarian authorities, following the example of Hungary and Poland, are discussing the idea of banning grain imports from Ukraine. Yavor Gechev, minister of agriculture of the Bulgarian technical government, told reporters.
“It is necessary to protect Bulgarian interests, moreover, when two states react in this way and we do not do it, the amount of Ukrainian grain on our territory will increase,” Bulgarian National Radio quoted the minister as saying.
As early as Monday, April 17, Gechev is awaiting reports on the legal component of the bans imposed by Hungary and Poland and is discussing such a possibility with the Ministry of Economy.
“I believe that as early as Tuesday we will gather all the information needed for a decision and discuss the situation with the president [Rumen Radev],” the minister added.
Earlier, Central European countries, including Bulgaria, Hungary and Poland, sent a collective appeal to the European Commission demanding that it take action in connection with deliveries of Ukrainian grain at dumping prices. Due to the disruption of normal trade routes, products from Ukraine do not reach their final destination and end up on European markets, causing damage to local farmers.
