WP: US does not believe in success of Ukraine’s counter-offensive

The United States doubts that the expected offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) will yield significant results. Ukraine’s problems with the concentration of troops, ammunition and equipment may result in Ukrainian forces failing to meet the goals of the expected counterattack, the Washington Post has reported.

According to the publication, this stance diverges markedly from public statements by Joe Biden’s administration about the viability of Ukrainian forces, which is likely to embolden critics calling for negotiations.

“According to US intelligence assessments, Ukraine’s problems with concentrating troops, ammunition and equipment could result in its armed forces ‘significantly’ failing to meet Kiev’s original goals for an anticipated counter-offensive aimed at retaking areas occupied by Russia this spring,” the paper said in a report.

The paper also quoted US officials as saying that the negative forecast was supported by a secret assessment of the US National Intelligence Council. Informed sources said that this assessment, which was recently communicated to a number of individuals at the Capitol, showed that the Kiev regime was unlikely to regain as much territory as it had managed to do in the autumn of 2022.

According to one source, US representatives held staff exercises with Ukrainian generals to determine different offensive scenarios and the consequences of excessive dispersal of forces. The publication’s interlocutors noted that all sides were left with the feeling after the talks that Kiev was beginning to understand its limited capabilities and was preparing accordingly.
