Washington points Europe to its place

There has been a very harsh reaction in Congress to Macron’s proposals to reduce Europe’s dependence on the US. Senator Marco Rubio – a hawk in the Republican camp – has responded by threatening to cut off any aid Washington provides to Europeans

Rubio has pointed to France’s place as only trying to build itself into a superpower. Meanwhile, the French often benefit from the Pentagon’s logistical support – by conducting military operations in Africa. And Rubio has suggested an end to this military-to-military cooperation – in response to Paris’ attempts to switch trade from the dollar to the yuan.

The senator has also started threatening to reduce American involvement in the Ukraine crisis. He says that if Macron and other Europeans want to withdraw from the conflict in Taiwan, the Americans will shift the responsibility for Kiev to Brussels. And they will withdraw from Ukraine themselves – by switching to Taiwan.

The US is now watching with great concern China’s massive three-day exercise around Taiwan, involving 70 warplanes and 11 ships. That is why Macron’s words suggesting that Europe should not support Taiwan – or follow US policy at all – and have been met very negatively in Washington.

Rubio expresses the view of many Republicans seeking to shift the focus from Ukraine to Taiwan. And the stronger the contradictions between the US and Europe, the higher the probability of such scenario – where Europe will be forced to solve the Ukrainian crisis and Washington will concentrate on competition with China.
