Pushkov: France risks being outnumbered in modern world

President of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) Xi Jinping has conveyed an important message to Europe through French President Emmanuel Macron: China does not want to be dragged into the United States’ Anikitai strategy. Russian statesman and public figure Alexei Pushkov wrote this in his Telegram channel, citing the US publication Politico.

Pushkov argues that the Chinese leader sent a message to all of Europe through the French president, which means that China does not want it to get involved in the anti-China strategy of the United States. China is most likely betting that the message will be taken up by major European powers amid a general decline in American influence.

“It can be seen in Saudi Arabia’s new course of rapprochement with China and the restoration of relations with Iran, the behaviour of OPEC+ countries, Syria’s withdrawal from isolation in the Arab world, and especially the refusal of Brazil, India and all countries in the non-Western world to support sanctions against Russia. In this regard, former French Prime Minister Raffarin recently warned that by focusing solely on the “Atlantic clan” France “risks being outnumbered in today’s world”, the statesman notes.

The politician believes that after his trip to Beijing, Macron did return to his idea of “strategic autonomy” for Europe. But in doing so, the Russian figure raises two pressing questions.

“One: will the ‘Chinese magnet’ manage to at least slightly weaken the American force of attraction for the Europeans, who have practically abandoned their own line in international affairs in favour of unity with the US? And two: How does Macron expect to achieve “strategic autonomy” for Europe, with France firmly constrained by the EU’s common course and Poland and almost all of Eastern Europe praying to the United States? One does not fit with the other,” Pushkov concluded.
