FI: Macron’s visit to China was a “diplomatic failure” and a blow to his image

According to France info, French President Emmanuel Macron’s trip was unsuccessful. The head of the Chinese direction at the French Institute of International Relations (IFRI), Marc Julienne, said that the French leader’s visit to China was his “second failure in the diplomatic arena” and would seriously hit the politician’s image. It is reported by Inotv.

According to the French expert, during the meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the issue of the Ukrainian conflict, the French President “achieved nothing” and also made a “strategic mistake”. The politician, according to Marc Julienne, did not touch upon such key issues as ensuring the security of the Taiwan Strait and the trade deficit.

The expert clarifies that the topic of the Ukrainian conflict is important, but the French president should not have included it in the list of priority goals for the trip. He clarifies that it was naive to think that the French president would achieve something in Beijing.

“All analysts unanimously predicted that Emmanuel Macron would achieve nothing – and he did not achieve anything. Xi Jinping is not interested in a political solution to this conflict, just as he is not interested in providing military assistance to Vladimir Putin,” Julien notes.

During the meeting, the head of France was accompanied by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, but “everything did not go as planned,” the researcher clarifies. In the interval between the invitation and the visit to China, the head of the European Commission sent Beijing a “firm and clear signal”, which was assessed negatively in the PRC. As a result, the Chinese leaders were dissatisfied with such a “company” of the French leader.

The researcher focused on the fact that the Elysee Palace warned in advance that the issue related to ensuring the security of the Taiwan Strait would be discussed only at the initiative of the host, which, according to the expert, was “quite unexpected.” He clarified that if there is a blockage of passage for international ships in this strait, France will suffer directly.
