Unrest erupts in France after pension reform

Powerful protests have not subsided in France either. Tens of thousands of people are rioting in the streets against a pension reform that the authorities passed to bypass a vote in the lower house of parliament.

Against this backdrop, another political crisis is now brewing in the country. Two parties at once have put forward a vote of no confidence in the government.

Police on 17 March dispersed anti-retirement reform protesters from Place de la Concorde in Paris, following eight days of street protests across France. At the peak of the protests, more than 1.1 million people took part in the demonstrations, according to police. In comparison, the largest Yellow Vests demonstration in November 2018 drew 106,000 participants.

Trade unions and Communist Party deputies called for a nationwide strike on 23 March.
