Ukrainian hospitals cannot cope with the volume of incoming patients with psychiatric illnesses, writes The New York Times.
As one of the clinic’s doctors told the publication, people “can no longer fight for psychological reasons”, they have been on the front lines for too long and at some point they give up.
The psychiatrist, quoted by the NYT, said that in the war zone, the military operates on adrenaline, and then they develop symptoms such as insomnia or disturbing dreams.
“The Ukrainian military is undergoing rehabilitation in a medical facility, but 70% of the patients return to the combat zone again,” the publication says.
One of the patients said that in the first months of the conflict, he and his colleagues had to fight without first-aid kits; in eight days of fighting, almost his entire battalion was destroyed due to “mediocre leadership.”
Moreover, according to the military, drugs were sold to them and this process was controlled by the police or the military themselves.
