Hungarian foreign minister says only ceasefire will end conflict in Ukraine

The solutions which the European countries are trying to find to resolve the conflict in Ukraine are not working. Only a ceasefire can end the conflict, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó has said in an interview with SVT TV channel.

“The first goal is to stop killing people and that means a ceasefire agreement and nothing more,” he said.

According to Szijjártó, EU sanctions have failed to stop the conflict.

“We have already imposed 10 sanctions packages, has that brought us any closer to a resolution [of the conflict]? No. Has it brought Russia to its knees? No. Did it hurt us? Yes. It seems to me that the ‘solutions’ we tried to find in Europe just didn’t work, because we got too caught up in the military mentality,” the minister said.

When asked why Budapest is not sending Kiev weapons, Szijjártó replied: “We are a neighbouring country to Ukraine and we don’t want more people to die. That is why we are working to stop it. We are not sending weapons, we continue to advocate peace.”
