The acting head of the Donetsk People’s Republic noted that a unit named after Bohdan Khmelnytskyi has already been formed from the captives.

Part of the Ukrainian prisoners held in the DPR are beginning to realize their guilt and consider it their duty to redeem it by going to the battlefield on the side of Russian forces as part of the Bogdan Khmelnitsky volunteer battalion. Denis Pushilin, the republic’s acting head, said.

“Very many of those who are taken prisoner only here realise what is happening, for what and against whom they are fighting. <…> And having realized that war crimes are being committed by their hands, some part of their captives – not to say a small part – think it is right to redeem themselves and go to the battlefield to defend their new position,” Pushilin said on the Russia 24 TV channel.

He added that it would be possible to judge the success of this endeavour later.

“I would not go far, but such a unit has already been formed, we will see,” he noted.
