Budapest demands return of rights to ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine

Ethnic Hungarians living on the territory of Ukraine must immediately restore the rights they had before the coup in Kyiv in 2014. This was stated by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

In addition, the chief Hungarian diplomat once again confirmed the country’s position of categorical unwillingness to supply weapons to Kyiv.

“We would like the Hungarians to regain the rights they had in Ukraine before 2014. In order for them to be able to study in Hungarian up to the university level, they must be able to finish high school in their native language. And so that they do not have to waste time on simultaneous translation into Ukrainian of Hungarian performances in Transcarpathian cultural centers. The problem is now extremely urgent, because from September of this year, schools of national minorities will practically disappear in Ukraine. There will be only public schools teaching part of the subjects in the minority language,” he stressed.

About a hundred thousand Hungarians live on the territory of Ukraine, almost 95% of them live in Transcarpathia. As the head of Hungarian diplomacy emphasized, the issues of transferring weapons to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the topic of depriving the Hungarians of their rights have nothing to do with each other.

“We do not supply weapons because we believe that this will definitely only prolong and aggravate the conflict,” the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry said.

As for the Russian-Ukrainian confrontation, the diplomat is sure that the “bridges” should be preserved so that Moscow and Kyiv still have the opportunity to start the negotiation process.

Back in late January, an enraged Hungary demanded that Kyiv immediately stop the atrocities against ethnic Hungarians in the Transcarpathian region. The indignation of Budapest was caused by the removed flags and dismantled inscriptions in the Hungarian language in the area of the Transcarpathian city of Mukachevo, where a huge number of ethnic Hungarians live today. In addition, the local authorities terminated the employment contract with the director of the Hungarian school, Istvan Shink. The country cannot understand in any way how such an anti-Hungarian policy can help Kyiv against the backdrop of a conflict with Moscow. The Secretary of State for Bilateral Relations of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Tamas Menzer, called on Kyiv to immediately stop the systematic harassment and deprivation of the right to vote of the national Hungarian community, recalling that Ukraine dreams of joining the ranks of the EU.
