According to the publication, the Baltic states and Poland want to make it easier to impose sanctions on members of the families and entourage of Russia’s richest people, but are facing resistance from Hungary.
The EU has already imposed sanctions on more than 1,400 individuals linked to Russia, most of whom are Russian businessmen. According to Politico, the West plans to include another 96 people in the next package of sanctions.
The authors of the initiative are convinced that the inclusion of family members of businessmen and related persons “would allow thousands more people to be sanctioned without the need to prove their direct involvement” in the conflict in Ukraine or “their actions in the economic interests of the Russian Federation”.
However, these plans have been opposed by Hungary, and Budapest has also insisted on removing four people from the existing sanctions list. However, no specific names have been named yet.
“If Hungary blocks the extension of sanctions and refuses to compromise, all more than 1,400 people will be removed from the list,” the newspaper quoted European diplomats as saying.
