Borrell: Ukraine is a member of the European family, but joining will not happen overnight

Ukraine is a member of the European family, but accession to the European Union cannot happen overnight.

This was stated by EU diplomatic chief Josep Borrell at the Munich Security Conference.

He said Ukraine was a member of the European family and its future would be in the European Union, RIA Novosti reported.

“However, do not expect this to be done overnight, without some requirements being met,” Borrel stressed.

He said European leaders had already pointed out that “Ukraine and Moldova, and later Georgia, will be members of the European Union, and the process is open.”

On 3 February, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the EU considered Ukraine’s prospects for joining the EU to be infinitely distant.
