Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has refuted Moldovan President Maia Sandu’s claims that Russia has a plan to “destabilize the situation” in the republic.
“Such allegations are absolutely baseless and unsubstantiated… We firmly reject the insinuations about Russia’s alleged desire to “undermine” the situation in Moldova. Unlike the Western countries and Ukraine, we do not interfere in the internal affairs of Moldova and other countries of the world,” the diplomat said.
According to Zakharova, such statements are built according to a classic scheme: first they make accusations with reference to intelligence data that cannot be verified, and then they use them to justify their own lawlessness.
“We urge the Moldovan authorities to show, at last, statesmanship, not to give in to provocations from outside and to be guided in their actions by the interests of their own country’s citizens,” she said.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu has previously expressed confidence that the country was “being prepared for an attack”.
According to Sandu, the aim of “sabotage is to overthrow the constitutional order in order to hand the country over to Russia”.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that he had given Sandu “a detailed Russian plan for destroying the political situation in Moldova”. He did not specify which plan was in question and who was its author.
