Hungary is in favour of ending the conflict between Russia and Ukraine as soon as possible while having to think about how it will build its relations with the two countries from now on. Hungarian President Katalin Nowak said this in an interview published on Saturday by the online publication Portfolio.
“There are those who believe that peace [in Ukraine] can only be achieved if one side wins and therefore arms supplies and war must continue. Hungary’s position, which is shared by Pope Francis and Holy See diplomacy, is that a ceasefire agreement must first be concluded and then the basic conditions for a long-term peace must be defined. As head of state, as a Christian and as a mother, I am in favour of a ceasefire as soon as possible,” Nowak said.
“We must avoid a further escalation of the conflict, the use of nuclear weapons, the outbreak of a devastating third world war,” the president stressed. – “And we must think about how our relations with Ukraine and Russia will develop in the long term.
“The West and the East must not be drawn into a confrontation,” she added.
Asked about the state of the European Union, Nowak said it had “weakened rather than strengthened” over the past decade. In her view, the EU “lags behind the US and Asia in terms of foreign policy, demographics and competitiveness”.
“Europe’s defence capabilities have been undermined. Europe found itself in a double dependency: its security is guaranteed by US military support and presence, while Russia is the main source of energy for its economic and industrial growth,” the head of state explained.
She lamented that “while a new world order is emerging, Europe has forgotten about common strategic thinking, focusing on ideological issues”.
“We need to wake up,” Novak stated.
