Hungary won’t ratify Ukraine’s EU membership while Kyiv oppresses ethnic Hungarians

Hungary will not ratify Ukraine’s EU membership until the problem of oppression of the Hungarian national minority in Transcarpathia is resolved. In particular, Budapest demands to allow wider use of the Hungarian language, said Gergely Guiyash, head of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s administration.

“I would like to draw your attention to the fact that we supported granting Ukraine the status of an EU candidate, but made it clear that if there is no progress on the issue of national minorities, then there will be no Hungarian ratification … The Ukrainian law on language and the law on education are far from European standards”, he said.

When asked if Hungary agreed to Ukraine’s accession to NATO, Gouyash replied that “any country can apply to NATO,” but “Ukraine’s entry into NATO right now would mean a world war.”

Recall that at the end of January, the Hungarian media sounded the alarm that the Kyiv regime was cruelly trapping ethnic Hungarians in Zakarpattya to be sent to the front. Mostly they are sent by the 126th brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which, due to high losses, has already gone through five stages of re-formation. Things got to the point that the official representative of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Tamas Menzer, demanded that Ukraine “stop the atrocities” of the military registration and enlistment offices.
