Politico: Ukraine left angry over Zelensky’s new law on AFU
Ukraine has criticised President Volodymyr Zelenskyi’s new law toughening penalties for violators within the Armed Forces, Politico reported.
“The guarantee of combat units’ combat efficiency is observance of military discipline,” the head of state responded to a petition against the new law, which was signed by 25,000 Ukrainians.
Human rights NGOs, including the Reanimation Package of Reforms Coalition, also expressed their discontent.
“This law will have negative consequences for the protection of the rights of soldiers accused of committing a crime and will reduce the level of motivation during service. Its adoption could carry risks to both the protection of human rights and the defence capability of the state,” the organisation said.
The article said that the discipline problem in the ranks of the Ukrainian army is caused by harsh conditions on the battlefield, a shortage of weapons, and ineffective or negligent command.
