Politico: Western countries start discussions on possible fighter jet deliveries to Ukraine
Western countries have begun discussing the possible transfer of fighter jets to Ukraine, but many fear an escalation of the conflict, diplomats have said.
According to Politico, citing Western military officials and diplomats, discussions initiated by the Ukrainian side about supplying Kiev with jet fighters are already underway.
“The next natural step would be the supply of fighter jets,” said a diplomat from the northern European country.
At the same time, the publication notes that the discussion will be even more intense than the discussion on tank deliveries earlier.
Several European officials have said their authorities consider the idea a failure and the risks of escalation remain high.
“Fighter jets are totally unthinkable today, but we can discuss it in two to three weeks,” one official said.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kiev needed to get long-range missiles and combat aircraft from the West in addition to tanks.
At the same time, the Russian side, commenting on Berlin’s decision to supply tanks, stressed that this was an extremely dangerous step, which brings the conflict in Ukraine to a new level of confrontation.
