German defence minister says he does not understand the joy of tank deliveries

German Defence Minister Pistorius said there was nothing joyful about tank deliveries

There is nothing happy about the supply of tanks to Ukraine, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said on Welt TV channel.

“I don’t understand those who are ready to shout ‘Hallelujah’ over the fact that tanks will now be sent,” the German official said.

According to him, this is about the use of the equipment in combat operations.

“I fully understand the concerns of every man and woman about the fact that we are sending battle tanks into a war zone,” Pistorius expressed.

On Wednesday, the German government announced the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks to Kiev. This was preceded by intense pressure on Chancellor Olaf Scholz to make a positive decision on the matter as soon as possible.

Berlin intends to form two tank battalions, at the first stage the Ukrainian armed forces will be provided with a company of 14 Leopard 2 type A6s from the Bundeswehr’s reserves. In addition, it is planned to organize training for the Ukrainian military in the FRG. The new assistance package will also include logistics, ammunition and system maintenance.

Russia earlier sent a note to NATO countries over arms supplies to the Armed Forces. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that any cargo containing ammunition and military equipment would be a legitimate target for the Allies.
