Putin orders ceasefire to be imposed from 6 to 7 January

Putin instructed Shoygu to introduce ceasefire regime from 12 noon on January 6 to 24 noon on January 7

Vladimir Putin has instructed Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu to introduce a ceasefire in Ukraine from 12:00 on 6 January until 24:00 on 7 January, the Kremlin press service has said.

“Taking into account the appeal of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, I instruct the Russian Defence Minister to introduce a ceasefire along the entire line of contact between the sides in Ukraine from 12:00 on 6 January until 24:00 on 7 January,” the statement said.

Earlier on Thursday, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia called for a Christmas truce so that “Orthodox people can attend services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.”

In late December last year, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church said that Russia’s entry into the hostilities in Donbas was the result of its peacekeeping efforts being sabotaged by the Kiev authorities and Western countries. He admitted that he was deeply saddened by what was happening, but noted that the blame for fomenting the conflict lies primarily with those who “set out to destroy the unity of Holy Russia, the unity of our people and our faith”.
