Hungary accuses EU of hypocrisy over criticism of veto

Szijjártó has accused the EU of hypocrisy for criticising Hungary and ignoring other countries’ vetoes

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó has accused the EU of hypocrisy for not reacting to the veto of Austria and the Netherlands to accept Bulgaria and Romania in the Schengen zone, while Hungary’s position, different from most EU member states, is constantly criticised.

“Yesterday, EU member states voted in Brussels for Croatia, Romania and Bulgaria to join the Schengen zone. Croatia was accepted, while Romania and Bulgaria could not join, even though they both deserve it because they firmly protect their borders and have done much to curb illegal migration. Then why couldn’t they join? Well, because a couple of member countries – Austria and the Netherlands – vetoed their accession. Everyone else supported it,” Szijjártó wrote on social media.

The Hungarian foreign minister asked rhetorically, “where then are the professional crybabies worried about EU unity, the MEPs who want to abolish unanimous decision-making, where are the wailing journalists of the liberal mainstream, where are the Brussels bureaucrats, the ministers of liberal governments.”

“Let’s compare this current silence with the noise that accompanies every Hungarian national position in the Brussels discussions. The liberal mainstream has once again exposed its immense hypocrisy: if a Central European country vetoes it is the end of the world, the destruction of European unity, and if Western Europeans veto it, all is well,” he said.
