The Turkish authorities plan to increase the cost of the passage of merchant ships through the Bosporus and Dardanelles fivefold from October 7, 2022, writes the Turkish newspaper Sabah.
It is reported that after the entry into force of the decision, Turkey’s annual income will increase by $200 million. Now the country earns $40 million a year from the straits. The money from the fees will be spent on medical care and evacuation in case of emergency, as well as on ensuring the operation of lighthouses.
The newspaper clarifies that the decision was made in accordance with the rights granted to Turkey by the Montreux Convention.
