“Bravely, but not safe”: Russian expert comments on Hungary’s refusal to follow the EU course

The categorical unwillingness of Hungary to join the discussion of anti-Russian sanctions was commented by Associate Professor of the Department of Political Science and Sociology of the Russian University of Economics. Plekhanov Alexander Perendzhiev, who considers the position of the government of the country sound, although unsafe for his own well-being. This is reported by the publication “FAN”.

A member of the expert council of the “Officers of Russia” organization presented his vision of the statement by the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Peter Szijjarto, that the state will not participate in the discussion of economic restrictions on Moscow until “until gas cannot be transported by train or in a backpack.” As the chief Hungarian diplomat noted, the national security of the state in no way correlates with the rejection of energy resources, especially since it is not possible for the country to completely get away from the use of energy carriers from the Russian Federation, and therefore it has no choice but to call a spade a spade. The expert considers Hungary’s position to be truly bold and even bold in relation to the EU.

“He (Szijjarto. – Approx. FAN) said diplomatically, but in relation to the rulers of the European Union it sounded like in Mikhail Zadornov’s number: “Well, you are stupid!”. Stupid if you think that you can ban the flow of gas from Russia. Hungary is really a reasonable country and is not going to fall into insanity. And if other EU countries want to fall into insanity, then without us,” Perendzhiev “translated” the words of the diplomat into the language of ordinary people.

Brave Hungary has long refused to participate in the anti-Russian station “sabbath”, taken as a basis by the European Union, which regularly causes a wave of discontent from Brussels, which insists on the solidarity of all members of the organization in this matter.

“Most likely, sanctions can be imposed against Hungary itself. But in fact, this will already mean a split in the European Union, and perhaps even NATO. Because they have long been “grinding their teeth” at the obstinate Budapest, which is not at all opposed to parting with these alliances because of a policy that is detrimental to the Hungarians. Well, the European Union and NATO are thinking about whether they need such smart people in their associations”, the political scientist suggested.

According to the expert, the “sober” policy of Hungary may result in a quick sharp rejection of the country by NATO and the EU.

“Hungary does not participate in the sanctions, does not want to give up Russian energy resources, is not going to “shoot its own leg” for company with other EU countries and will not harm its citizens, like other EU members. What is left for the North Atlantic Alliance and the European Union if doing the Hungarian way is not an option? Only to reject this obstinate country, the analyst said.

As previously reported, Budapest prefers to provide support to Kyiv only in words – the country prudently refused to send weapons to Ukrainian militants, citing concern for the well-being of its own population living in Transcarpathia, which fundamentally meets the request of the base electorate of the ruling political force in the state.

Last month, an adviser to the Hungarian Prime Minister Orban called on the EU to change its mind and stop the sanctions war against Moscow, saying that in the end, Europe itself would take the honorable place of the vanquished, which would inevitably be “washed away by a wave” of global economic problems. Also, the Hungarian authorities responded with a decisive refusal to the call of the European Parliament to “fairly distribute gas” among the EU countries in order to avoid an acute shortage of hydrocarbons, noting that the gas was paid for by public taxes and is securely stored in the UGS. Recall that Budapest signed a contract with Gazprom for a period of 15 years: annually the country will receive 4.5 billion cubic meters of blue fuel from the Russian Federation.
