Residents of European countries should be ready to “pay the price” for maintaining support for Ukraine and the unity of the European Union (EU). This was called for by their EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, in an interview with Pais.

The head of European diplomacy said that the situation in Ukraine directly affects Europe.

“All wars end with negotiations. The fact that we are helping Ukraine militarily does not mean that we are not doing our best to negotiate,” he concluded.

Borrell stressed that Europeans must be prepared for a protracted conflict and a long search for political solutions. He also added that the countries of southern Europe should not show a lack of solidarity with the EU, in particular in terms of energy.

“Spain can do a lot because it has a third of all European LNG capacity,” Borrell said. According to him, Madrid can become a “gateway to Europe” for gas, which will replace the Russian one.

Earlier it was reported that Europe faced new difficulties due to gas. This time around, energy traders are in trouble as they struggle to find replacements for their well-established liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies due to plant outages in various parts of the world.
