The search for volunteers among French families who are ready to host Ukrainian refugees for a while is progressing with difficulty, and those who have already accommodated Ukrainians complain of unbearable expenses. This was stated by the President of the Accueil Familles du Monde Refugee Association, Claudine Charriera.

“Finding host families is very, very difficult. Volunteering has its limits. When you host guests at your home, or in a small apartment next door, you want to do it for one, two, three months, but you don’t see a way out and think that you can’t pay all these expenses, because those who are hosted are not necessarily are people with sufficient means,” she explained to Radio FranceInfo.

She clarified that 100 thousand refugees from Ukraine have been registered in France since the beginning of the conflict, and against this background, the authorities even promised financial assistance in the amount of 150-200 euros to everyone who accommodates visitors. “This money is eagerly awaited because “so far no one has received any help,” said Sharyera. And because of rising gas and electricity bills, “some families are really suffering.”

“We understand that we cannot talk about specific dates in such a situation – when people will arrive and when they will be able to leave, but we would like to have clearer prospects, but there are none. This is very difficult for host families. In addition, when we talk about rural areas, we should consider the cost of travel just to go shopping, to the doctor, to school or for administrative reasons. This is a very, very big financial burden for families,” she concluded.
