French authorities urged to prepare for a complete cessation of gas supplies from Russia

The French government is preparing for a complete cessation of gas supplies from Russia, said Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire. It is reported by Reuters.

“I believe that a complete cessation of Russian gas supplies is real, and we must prepare for such a scenario,” the minister said.

He added that he considers it irresponsible not to foresee such a development of events, since, in his opinion, it is most likely.

According to Bruno Le Maire, first of all, the government is considering reducing gas consumption by households and businesses, then building infrastructure for receiving and regasifying LNG. The authorities also admit that some companies will have to reduce production in order to save energy.

France gets about 17% of its gas from Russia, less than some of its neighbors, but the government is preparing a contingency plan. The fact is that the cessation of Russian fuel supplies will create serious problems for Paris, since a significant proportion of nuclear reactors are now under maintenance, and it will be problematic to replace the falling capacities with them, the publication notes.
