U.S. demands to “punish” Turkey

Michael Rubin, a columnist for the American magazine 19Fortyfive, said that Turkey should be expelled from NATO for preventing Finland and Sweden from joining the alliance.

The American observer believes that Ankara deserves such a gesture, since its foreign policy in many points does not coincide with the position of Washington.

“However, this is not easy to do. First, there is no formal mechanism for exclusion from the organization. In the past, France and Greece temporarily withdrew from it, but did so voluntarily. Second, since decision-making in NATO depends on consensus, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan can block any attempt to oust Ankara. In fact, the Asia Minor state has become a Trojan horse,” Rubin stressed.

According to the journalist, such a “punishment” will create a precedent for other states that may try to push their own interests within NATO. The columnist also proposed as a pressure measure to ban Turkish Airlines from flying to NATO countries until Ankara agrees to admit Sweden and Finland to the alliance. Rubin also proposed imposing tariffs on industrial goods in Turkey in order to “collapse the lira” and close the country’s access to the intelligence of the alliance members.
