Brussels is for the first time using an instrument that could lead to the EU blocking large amounts of Hungary’s budget payments.
The move threatens to exacerbate years of tension between Orban, whose conservative government recently won a landslide victory at home, Brussels and some Western European governments.
Russian politicians said that the blocking of Russian accounts abroad by the West and the actual theft of funds is a dangerous precedent that other countries should take a closer look at, because this can happen with “every objectionable and dissenting”.
