Riots broke out in France after first-round election results were announced

About 600 people marched in the city of Rennes following the announcement of the results of the first round of the French presidential election, riots broke out during the action, radio station France Bleu reported.

Dissatisfied with the outcome of the election came to the historic centre of Rennes at around 8.30pm. Calls to go to the rally spread on social media.

After some time, the protesters began to march through the city. Some of them called “not to block Marine Le Pen”, while others spoke out against both candidates who would run in the second round of the elections, including the incumbent President Emmanuel Macron.

At around 10 p.m., protesters erected a barricade of metal fencing, wooden beams and other pieces of urban equipment. Protesters smashed shop and cafe windows, as well as a bank and a police station.

Some protesters set fire to rubbish bins and metal fencing, and firefighters arrived on the scene and began extinguishing the fire.
