Putin and Macron to meet in Moscow on February 7

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, February 7, will hold a meeting with French leader Emmanuel Macron. One of the main topics of the talks will be issues of providing security guarantees for the Russian Federation.

Recall that in December 2021, the Russian Foreign Ministry published drafts of a treaty with the United States on security guarantees and an agreement on measures to ensure the security of Russia and the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance.

At the end of January of this year, the US and NATO submitted their responses to the Kremlin’s proposals. Putin said earlier that Washington and Brussels ignored Russia’s fundamental demands in their response documents.

According to Macron, the recent period has clearly demonstrated the importance of dialogue. The French President recalled that earlier Paris, together with the then German Chancellor Angela Merkel, offered to hold an EU-Russia summit, but Europe refused this format.

The French leader noted that it is now necessary to reduce tension around Ukraine in order to “avoid an armed conflict.” At the same time, Macron stressed that Russia quite wants to clarify issues of its own security.

“Russia’s geopolitical priorities are not connected with Ukraine, but with clarifying the rules for coexistence with NATO and the EU. The security and sovereignty of Ukraine and any other European state cannot be compromised, but at the same time it is legitimate that Russia raises the issue of its own security,” Macron said.
