A mutually acceptable decision on the fate of the monument to Soviet Marshal Ivan Konev is one of the conditions for restoring the constructive nature of relations between Russia and the Czech Republic, Oleg Tyapkin, director of the third European Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
To date, the further fate of the monument to Konev is unclear, he noted. The Russian side was working on various options for a worthy placement of the monument, including the possibility of transferring it to the memorial to Soviet soldiers at the Olshansky cemetery in Prague, Tyapkin explained. There were ideas for its installation on the territory of the embassy in Prague, as an extreme option – the export of the monument to Russia.
“However, at this stage of relations with the Czech Republic, which have seriously deteriorated over the past year due to a series of unfriendly actions of the Czech side, such work, unfortunately, is not possible,” the diplomat emphasized.
