Czech Prosecutor General Pavel Zeman resigns on June 30 over a controversy over explosions at military depots in Vrbetica.
Zeman called the reason for his departure the pressure from the head of the Ministry of Justice of the republic, Maria Beneševa, on the issue of explosions at warehouses in Vrbetica. According to the Prosecutor General, after he disagreed with the position of Prime Minister Andrei Babish, who announced the involvement of foreign special services in the explosions, Bebesheva began to threaten him.
Most likely, after Zeman’s departure, his post will be taken by former military prosecutor Igor Strzhizh. His candidacy has not yet been approved: it is assumed that Zeman’s successor will be appointed by the new government after elections to be held in October.
As a reminder, in 2014, ammunition explosions occurred at military depots in the village of Vrbetitsa. In April 2021, Prague accused the Russian special services of involvement in the incident and demanded compensation from Russia in the amount of 25.5 million euros. In addition, 18 employees of the Russian embassy were expelled from the Czech Republic. Moscow firmly denied all accusations by the Czech authorities and included the Czech Republic on the list of unfriendly countries.
