Reuters: Macron told Johnson that a new phase in relations between the two countries was needed

According to the agency, the French president said in particular that relations between the two countries could only develop if Britain rigorously implemented the provisions of its withdrawal agreements with the European Union

French President Emmanuel Macron believes that Paris and London should start a new phase in their bilateral relations. The French leader said so on Saturday during talks with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit being held in Britain, Reuters reported.

According to the agency’s source, the French president “told Boris Johnson that a reset in Franco-British relations must begin”. According to the reports, Macron, in particular, pointed out to Johnson that relations between the two countries could only develop if Britain scrupulously complied with the terms of its agreements with the European Union to leave the community.

According to BFM, the French president said he would not renegotiate these terms.

At the same time, the French leader stressed that France and Great Britain have considerable common interests in areas such as security, defence and climate protection.

Macron is due to have a second meeting with US President John Biden on Saturday afternoon. The first round of talks between the two politicians took place in the town of Carbis Bay in south-west Britain on Friday evening.
