A group of 28 US senators called on the Israeli military and the radical Hamas movement to reach an immediate ceasefire agreement as soon as possible. It is reported by The Hill newspaper.
“To avoid further civilian casualties and escalation of the conflict in Israel and the Palestinian territories, we call for an immediate ceasefire”, – the senators said in a joint statement.
The Hill emphasizes that the initiative came at a time when the administration of US President Joe Biden “blocked a joint attempt by the governments of China, Norway and Tunisia to submit a statement on behalf of the UN Security Council calling for an end to this conflict”.
Earlier it became known that the draft of such a statement was discussed at a meeting of the UN Security Council and was supported by 14 out of 15 of its members. Only the United States opposed it, citing the need for additional time for Washington to carry out independent diplomatic efforts.
The Israel Defense Forces reported that over the past week, the radicals of the Hamas movement fired over three thousand rockets across the country.
