This was stated by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu after discussing bilateral relations and Israeli attacks in Jerusalem.
“We had a very open and sincere meeting. We decided to continue our dialogue”, – Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters, commenting on the meeting with his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan al-Saud.
Talks between the foreign ministers of Turkey and Saudi Arabia were aimed at overcoming differences over the 2018 killing of Saudi opposition journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Istanbul.
Cavusoglu said he invited his Saudi counterpart to visit Turkey to continue negotiations, adding that the necessary work will be done to strengthen bilateral ties.
Commenting on the ongoing escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in the region, the head of Turkish diplomacy said:
“We always condemn (Israeli attacks) like these, but the Muslim community expects us to take steps. Such attacks must stop immediately. Of course, we must defend the rights of Palestinians within the framework of international law”.
He also noted that the steps to be taken to protect the Palestinians in the face of Israeli attacks will be discussed in detail at the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) next week.
Cavusoglu is currently on a two-day visit to Saudi Arabia, where he, according to the Turkish minister himself earlier on Twitter, will discuss “bilateral relations and important regional issues, especially the attacks on the Al-Aqsa mosque and the oppression of the Palestinian people”.
Recall that relations between Saudi Arabia and Turkey deteriorated sharply after the assassination of opposition journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Kingdom’s Consulate General in Istanbul in October 2018.
