The election of the new president of Israel will be held in the Knesset (the country’s parliament) on June 2. The term of office of the incumbent President Reuven Rivlin expires on July 9.
“Knesset Speaker Yariv Levin has ruled that elections for the next president of Israel will be held on Wednesday, June 2. Presidential elections will be held by secret ballot at the Knesset plenum. Submission of applications for participation in the elections as a candidate is possible until May 19”, – the press service of the parliament said.
A candidate for the post of head of state can only be nominated by a group of at least 10 current parliamentarians. The President is elected by secret ballot in the Knesset. To win the elections, you just need to get a majority of votes. There are 120 deputies in the Israeli parliament.
