France threatens Britain with sanctions over fisheries dispute

The UK could lose access to the EU financial services market

This is how Paris intends to respond to the situation with fishing permits in British waters, said Clement Bon, France’s junior minister for European affairs. In an interview for the Journal du Dimanche, the official recalled that the British authorities had still not issued 40 fishing permits to French fishermen. He also demanded that the additional conditions imposed by the authorities of the British island of Jersey be lifted.

Bohn drew attention to the fact that London is now trying to unilaterally renegotiate those terms of the deal with the European Union on which Britain had to make concessions.

“We will not let them do that”, –  the French minister said.

As News Front previously reported, French fishermen have recently faced obstacles in accessing numerous fishing areas between 6 and 12 nautical miles off the British coast. The United Kingdom has been delaying the process of issuing licences, and French fishermen recently staged a protest right on the water off the island of Jersey.
