In Mediterranean Sea, about 130 illegal migrants die in boat capsizing

Off the coast of Libya in the Mediterranean Sea, about 130 illegal migrants were killed as a result of a boat coup. This was reported by the non-governmental organization SOS Mediterranee.

SOS Mediterranee’s Ocean Viking was sent to international waters off the coast of Libya on Thursday after receiving information about three boats in distress.

“Today, after hours of searching, our worst fears have come true. Since we arrived at the crash site today, we have not found a single survivor, although we have seen at least 10 bodies in the area of the crash site”, – the organization said.

The rescue operation was carried out in adverse weather conditions: the waves in the search area reached six meters. Frontex, an EU border control agency plane, found fragments of a rubber boat near the scene of the incident.

Libya remains one of the main transit points for African refugees seeking to enter European states. According to the National Human Rights Committee of Libya, in 2020 more than 11 thousand migrants were rescued and brought to the country off the coast of the country.
