French foreign minister advocates continued dialogue with Russia despite sanctions

Jean-Yves Le Drian said there have already been signs of de-escalation in relations between Russia and the West

Russia is a neighbour with whom dialogue should continue despite the imposition of sanctions. This opinion was voiced by French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian on Sunday on France 3 TV channel.

“[The imposition of sanctions] does not prevent us from talking to Russia, no matter what. It is our neighbour”, –  he stressed. At the same time, Le Drian noted that there were already signs of de-escalation in relations between Russia and the West – one confirmation of this positive trend, he said, was the phone conversation between Russian and US presidents Vladimir Putin and Joe Biden.

On Tuesday, Putin and Biden had their second telephone conversation since the American president took office. According to the Kremlin, the two leaders discussed at length the state of bilateral relations and a number of international issues. The White House said that Biden had suggested that Putin hold a face-to-face meeting “in a third country” in the coming months.
