Senator Alexei Pushkov commented on the recent statement by French President Emmanuel Macron, who stressed that the North Atlantic Alliance has lost its meaning of existence.
Earlier, Macron said at the Munich Security Conference that “the North Atlantic Alliance is currently not relevant, since after its creation, the world has changed”.
“Macron’s statement reflects the objective problem of NATO, which does not respond to any of the real threats to the Western world – from terrorism to COVID-19, but heroically reflects threats invented or purely hypothetical”, – Pushkov wrote in his Telegram channel.
According to the senator, with the collapse of the USSR and the Eastern bloc, the Alliance lost its raison d’être, and therefore US President Joe Biden and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg simply need an imaginary “Russian threat”.
“Biden and Stoltenberg need a “Russian threat”: this is practically the only basis for NATO’s existence and for maintaining strategic US control over Europe. Without this fictitious threat, the Alliance will begin to crumble”, – the politician summed up.
