The US military aggression in Syria is leading to increased tension in the region and disruption of the outlined normalization of interaction between Washington and Iran in the framework of the nuclear deal, the head of the international committee of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev told the reporters on Friday.
“An extremely strange story, in which four states are involved – the United States, Iraq, Iran and Syria, but where only one of them – the United States – openly uses military force with the sanction of the state”, – the senator said.
According to him, this is happening in conditions when the circumstances of the rocket fire on the “green zone” in Baghdad on February 22 are not completely clear and when those responsible for this shelling are appointed in the most banal way – from among the geopolitical opponents.
“Thus, the United States once again arrogates to itself the right to conduct an investigation, pass a sentence and carry it out out of court and without observing the norms and principles of international law. Thus, this story grows from a strange into an openly dangerous one, when an escalation of military confrontation is possible”, – he concluded.
Earlier, the Pentagon said that as a result of the air strike in Syria, a number of infrastructure facilities of Shiite groups supported by Iran were destroyed. The move, the Pentagon noted, was a response to recent attacks on US and coalition forces in Iraq. US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said that the US military relied on intelligence information from the Iraqi side and are confident in the accuracy of the strike.
