The US President Joe Biden’s administration is considering easing sanctions against Iran as Washington seeks to reopen the 2015 nuclear deal, according to The Sunday Times.
It is noted that the head of the White House is considering the option of starting negotiations with the Iranian side. Nevertheless, according to the sources of the publication, there are prerequisites for a weakening of the sanctions regime by Washington.
“Easing sanctions is definitely on the way. Not today or tomorrow. But it is on the way”, – the reporters quoted the text of the article.
Last Friday, it became known that the United States withdrew a statement by the administration of former President Donald Trump about the renewal of UN sanctions against Iran.
EU Foreign Service Spokesman Peter Stano said that the EU is ready to organize consultations with the participation of the United States and other countries to discuss the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan (JCPOA) signed by Iran and a group of international mediators. According to him, the Iranian nuclear deal “is going through a very difficult moment”.
A joint comprehensive action plan concluded between the “six” countries (Great Britain, Germany, China, Russia, USA, France) and Iran in 2015 assumed the lifting of sanctions in exchange for limiting Iran’s nuclear program. The JCPOA did not last even three years – in May 2018, the United States announced a unilateral withdrawal from the deal and the restoration of tough sanctions against Tehran.
On January 5 of this year, in the context of aggravated relations with Washington, Tehran announced that it would abandon “the last key limitation in the nuclear deal” regarding the number of centrifuges for uranium enrichment.
It was reported that Iran has reached 20% uranium enrichment at the Fordow facility, which is sufficient to carry out some nuclear weapons work.
