Iran and IAEA hold talks ahead of inspection restrictions

Iran and the IAEA had fruitful negotiations, Iranian Permanent Representative to international organizations in Vienna Kazem Garib-Abadi said ahead of Tehran’s expected February 23 restrictions on the organization’s inspection activities.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi arrived in Tehran on Saturday evening, and on Sunday met with the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran and Vice President of the country Ali Akbar Salehi.

“Iran and the IAEA have had fruitful discussions based on mutual respect. The results will be published this evening”, – the diplomat wrote on Twitter.

Grossi’s visit to Iran is unscheduled – the need for an urgent visit arose after Tehran notified the IAEA of its intention to limit the inspection activities of the organization on February 23, in accordance with the previously adopted law.

Iran explained that the measure is reversible if the parties to the nuclear deal comply with Iran’s requirements, and does not imply a refusal to cooperate with the IAEA, as well as the abolition of all inspections – contacts will be held on issues of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
