Tehran sent a note of protest to Moscow over the publication by the Russian Foreign Ministry indicating the “Arab Gulf”, RIA Novosti reports with reference to the IRNA agency.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Said Khatibzadeh explained that in one of the posts on the Arabic-language Twitter account of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the name “Arabian Gulf” was mentioned in relation to the Persian Gulf.
“A note of protest was sent to the Russian Foreign Ministry through the embassy of our country in Moscow”, – Khatibzade said.
The agency explains that Iran recognizes the name of the waterway solely as “Persian Gulf” and does not recognize “Arabian Gulf” or “Gulf”, as it considers them inappropriate to the historical name.
In mid-January, it was reported that the Iranian army had begun large-scale exercises at the entrance to the Persian Gulf.
